Frank McParland to be appointed Liverpool’s new academy chief/ Administration 29/03/2009A report in The People this morning claims that "Liverpool are ready to make talent-spotter Frank McParland his new academy chief - with orders to find the next Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher. The Anfield club are worried that few local lads have come through the ranks since the first team stalwarts arrived a decade ago."
Having seemingly won the battle for control at Anfield, Rafa Benitez will first appoint McParland as head of the academy as he aims to secure the long-term futures of his backroom staff.
McParland was previously joint chief scout at Anfield and is described by the official Liverpool website as "instrumental in helping to restructure the club's entire scouting operation and been influential in attracting some highly-rated young British-based players to the club."
The 50-year-old had left Liverpool to join Sammy Lee at Bolton at the start of the 2007/2008 season and has also spent time at Watford where he was general manager.
According to Alan Nixon in The People, "Now Benitez wants McParland to breathe new life into Liverpool's youth scouting system and find the best youngsters around, especially if they are Scousers."
Former Liverpool goalkeeper and now Aston Villa’s number one shotstopper Brad Friedel has had his red card picked up at Anfield on Sunday rescinded by the Football Association.Friedel was sent off when he brought down Fernando Torres in the penalty area shortly after the hour mark. The F.A.’s decision means Friedel can continue his run of consecutive league games, which now stands at 182.More importantly, for Liverpool, it means he will be available to play against Manchester Utd in Aston Villa’s next Premier League match on April 5th.
United could also face a striker crisis for that game with Wayne Rooney suspended, Dimitar Berbatov injured and Carlos Tevez set to play for Argentina at a stadium 12,000 ft above sea level in Bolivia just 2 days before the game.
Liverpool can go top of the Premier League 24 hours earlier than Utd’s kick-off with victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage on April 4th.
Key members of Rafa Benitez's backroom team have today agreed new contracts with the club.
Assistant Manager Sammy Lee, First Team Coach Mauricio Pellegrino, Goalkeeping Coach Xavi Valero, Fitness Coach Paco de Miguel and Chief Scout Eduardo Macia have all been given extensions of at least two years on their current deals.
The move is part of a phased approach to address the future of the club's backroom staff.
Liverpool Manager Rafa Benitez commented: "I said when I signed my own deal recently that it was a priority to sort out the future of the technical staff.
"We work extremely well as a team and continuity is essential if we are to build on the progress we have made this season and move the club further forward. I'm delighted we have been able to sort out the contracts."
LONDON - Penyerang England, Wayne Rooney terlepas tindakan disiplin Persatuan Bola Sepak England (FA) berikutan kad merah diterimanya semasa menentang Fulham, Sabtu lalu.
- AFP
Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso could be set to miss more action as he struggles to overcome a slight knock picked up during the emphatic 4-0 victory over Real Madrid at Anfield last week.
The injury forced Alonso to hobble off during the second half of the game, and put him out of Saturday’s impressive 4-1 victory over arch-rivals Manchester United.
Reds boss Rafa Benitez appeared worried today, unsure whether the Spanish international will make Sunday’s Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa.
Benitez also has Yossi Benayoun, Philipp Degen, Daniel Agger and Alvaro Arbeloa sidelined through injury, although the latter two are expected to return to action soon.
“It will be difficult for Xabi Alonso,” Benitez told the club’s official web site. “He was training but only with the physios.
“At the moment we are only definitely without Yossi Benayoun and Philipp Degen so it’s very good for us that most of the players are fit because it means we can change them when we need to.”
Rafa Benitez has revealed how his relationship with the fans was key to him penning a new five-year deal at Anfield.
The Spaniard has enjoyed the unwavering backing of the Kop from the day he arrived on Merseyside in 2004.
And today he explained how a meeting with one supporter in particular last week once again illustrated to him how special the Anfield faithful was.
He said: "My message to the fans is very clear – it is because of them that I am signing this contract.
"This is a fantastic club with fantastic fans – it is as simple as that.
"Last week I met with a supporter who carries a flag to every game.
"The flag has a picture of me on it and the Spanish phrase 'siempre es possible' and it is flown at all our home games.
"I saw it at the Bernabeu also when we played Real Madrid and I met the supporter who owns the flag at Melwood last week.
"It was really funny because he was telling me 'you must sign' and saying 'I hope it is for 10 years' but then he was changing his mind 'no, no 20 years'.
"It was really funny but it also showed the incredible passion of the Liverpool fans and the support that they give to their manager."
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson handed his players Sunday off after Saturday's thumping by Liverpool.
Ferguson decided against hauling in his shamed stars for extra training after Saturday’s Old Trafford embarrassment.
Instead, he stuck to his original plan to use Sunday as a recovery day after their hectic recent schedule.
A United insider revealed to The Sun: “It’s been three games a week almost since they got back from the World Club Cup in Japan, so with a free week ahead of Fulham it was decided a day’s rest would be better.
“The players don’t need telling again how much the boss hurts.”
